CELEBRATING CREATIVITY ACROSS OUR ISLANDS: POETRY COMPETITION 2026
March is a special time for us. It’s National Library Month 2026, and across The Bahamas, we celebrate more than just books—we celebrate imagination, expression, and the voices of our young people.
This year, the NLIS Library Poetry Competition stands out as one of the most exciting opportunities for students across the Family Islands to showcase their creativity and love for language.
Imagine a child in Eleuthera, Abaco, Exuma, or Andros—pen in hand—transforming thoughts into poetry. That’s exactly what this competition is designed to inspire.
Whether it’s a story about their island, a dream for the future, or a simple moment turned into verse, this competition invites students from Primary, Junior, and Senior Schools to step into the world of poetry and be heard.
What makes this initiative even more meaningful is its reach. While students in Nassau will engage through in-library participation, this digital promotion ensures that Family Island students are equally empowered to participate from wherever they are. Distance is no barrier—creativity travels.
Participants are encouraged to write a fantastic poem related to libraries, books, or reading, and submit it via email. It’s simple, accessible, and designed to remove friction so that every student with a voice has a chance to share it.
And yes—there are prizes.
Each category will be recognized, with special awards including a standout prize for Primary School winners and recognition for the best overall poems in Junior and Senior divisions.
But beyond the prizes, the real reward is something deeper:
Confidence. Expression. Discovery.
This competition is not just about writing—it’s about helping young people realize that their words matter.
As we celebrate National Library Month, NLIS invites families, teachers, and communities across the islands to encourage participation. A single poem could spark a lifelong passion.
So let’s inspire our young writers.
Let’s celebrate our libraries.
And let’s give every child, on every island, the opportunity to turn their thoughts into something powerful.
